Lavender’s wonderful ability to calm anxiety and reduce stress is fairly well known. Through topical use, inhalation, and consumption this gentle plant can invoke a sense of peace and wellbeing.
A lesser known anti-anxiety plant that is fast becoming one of my favorites is orange. The bright, citrus smell of orange not only calms anxiety and reduces stress but also promotes a sense of happiness, working as a natural antidepressant.
Orange imparts a lavender kind of chill along with happy vibes
Multiple studies over the years have shown orange to reduce anxiety, stress, and depression simply through olfactory stimulation (smelling/inhaling).
In 2005, a study showed that orange significantly calmed anxiety in dental patients. Another study in 2014, verified the anti-anxiety effects of orange through prefrontal cortex activity. A study in 2015 showed orange to help reduce anxiety during labor, and in 2019, another study revealed the ability of orange to act as a natural antidepressant/mood booster.
How to get that sweet uplift in your life?
Eat them! The aroma of a fresh peeled orange will boost your mood and mind, and the vitamin C and antioxidants will nourish your body. Although we love eating oranges, it isn’t always practical, and that’s where essential oils can help. Essential oils are a great way for enjoying different plant benefits easily and efficiently. You can try diffusing orange essential oil (I like to combine it with bergamot; another sweet, mood booster), or using it topically; in a roll-on bottle or homemade skin care products. Orange essential oil also is safe for use with children, just make sure to always dilute your essential oils and even more so for use with children. My favorite essential oil brand is Plant Therapy – not only are their oils high quality, but they are also very affordable!
Next time you want a little calm and reach for the lavender, try some orange instead – feel that peace and an uplifted spirit!
