After searching for an organic, no nonsense body butter for myself and family, I found I could get a simpler ingredient list and save some money by creating my own. The formula below uses organic hydrating oils alongside powerful anti-aging, skin healing essential oils; perfect for renewing and bringing a healthy glow to the skin!

Heal, hydrate, and renew your skin with this luxurious body butter
Ingredients

Coconut oil – 8 oz (melted)
Shea butter – 7 oz (melted)
Jojoba oil – 3 oz
Sweet almond oil –  5 oz
Vitamin E oil – 1 oz

24 drops of each essential oil:
Myrrh
Helichrysum
Geranium
Frankinsense
Lavender
Rosemary
Tea tree

Instructions

Create a double boiler by placing a pot of water (1/3 full) on the stove and sit a glass bowl inside. Turn the stove onto medium-low heat and add the coconut oil and shea butter to the glass bowl (not the water). The water will heat up, heating up the glass bowl and slowly melting the oils. Once the coconut oil and shea butter are melted, remove the bowl from the pot and set aside. In another glass or metal bowl, add remaining oils: jojoba, sweet almond, and vitamin E. Once coconut oil and shea butter have cooled, but are not solidifying, add to second oil mixture and stir. This is your oil base.

Next add 24 drops of each essential oil to the oil base, that gives us a dilution of roughly 1%, suitable for whole body daily use and children over 2 years old. Gently mix (I used a whisk) the oil base and essential oils together.

For a whipped butter, set the bowl of oils in the fridge so it can solidify (it took mine about 1 hour). Once the oils have solidified, pull out your mixer and beat the oils on medium speed into a fluffy butter. Once desired consistency is reached, you’re done! I beat mine until it has formed peaks, like when making thick whipped cream.

Notes

This recipe makes about 24 oz of body butter, but after whipping it fills a little more than a 24 oz container. The body butter should last in its thick, fluffy state without turning rancid for a year (when kept in proper conditions – cool and dark place, with a lid on). This recipe is easily customize-able, feel free to mix up which oils and essential oils you use, you can enjoy experimenting to find your perfect blend or follow the recipe as is!

Why these ingredients?

The below oils can help to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks, improve complexion and acne, and moisturize the skin in a non-comedogenic way. You can adjust the recipe for sensitivities and allergies as needed.

Coconut oil is easily absorbed and hydrating to the skin, it also has antioxidants that help to soothe irritated skin and diminish signs of aging.

Shea butter is full of fatty acids and, like coconut oil, is soothing to the skin and very moisturizing. It also has antifungal properties, boosts collagen production, and promotes wound healing.

Jojoba oil is antibacterial, an antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory, while also being moisturizing and healing to the skin.

Sweet almond oil has vitamin E and A, along with fatty acids and zinc. It works as an antioxidant and is moisturizing while being light and easily absorbed. It is one of my favorite skin oils!

Vitamin E has so many benefits for the skin, and pure vitamin E oil is full of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that work against signs of aging while healing and nourishing the skin.

The essential oils used in this recipe are skin super-powers, each having properties that help promote a youthful, healthy glow.

Myrrh has been used for centuries in skin care because of its nourishing compounds, and anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Myrrh is perfect for soothing eczema, healing wounds, and fighting bacteria that can cause infections.

Helichrysum is great for the immune system and has incredible cleansing properties. Full of antioxidants, helichrysum works on the defense to protect your skin from free radical damage, while encouraging proper skin regeneration (great for scar fading).

Geranium is an adaptogenic plant with a delicate floral scent; its ability to balance the skin makes it great for nourishing combination types. Geranium works to tighten and firm the skin, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkles and restoring a youthful glow.

Frankinsense is wonderful for calming and soothing the skin; its anti-inflammatory properties help with wound and acne healing, as well as itching and swelling. Frankinsense can also help with skin elasticity and promote firmness.

Lavender is another soothing plant with anti-bacterial properties and helps to balance the skin moisture barrier, important for combating acne. Lavender is also anti-inflammatory, healing, and full of antioxidants that fight signs of aging.

Rosemary is not only wonderful for hair health but also has a myriad of benefits for the skin, including combating redness/inflammation, tightening the skin and stimulating blood flow, and as a natural astringent to clear oils and bacteria without drying out your skin.

Tea tree is commonly used for acne because of its strong anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-septic properties.

Other plant powers you could try are Roman chamomile, Bulgarian rose, and lemongrass.

Not feeling up for making your own body butter but still need something clean and nourishing? One of my favorite beauty brands, 100% Pure, offers a variety of delectable body butters that are worth checking out; I really like their Coconut Whipped Body Butter!

The skin is the body’s largest organ and readily absorbs applied compounds – let’s give it some love through natural powerful plants and renew it from the outside in!
